  4.     By posing the question "Can a slut be raped?" in your
  5. minireview of the film "The Accused" (CRITICS' CHOICE, Dec. 5), you
  6. not only undermine some of the major themes of the film but also
  7. trivialize the crime of rape. The phraseology, although perhaps
  8. provocative, merely promotes outdated, offensive stereotypes about
  9. rape: that promiscuous women somehow deserve to be raped or are
  10. "asking for it." To use the word slut in this case is a vulgar and
  11. cheap shot.
